No-dig supporters have often cited trenchless technology as being more environmentally friendly when compared to open-cut work. Now, it seems the industry has more than just words to go on, according to an article written be Peter O’Sullivan in the January/February issue of Trenchless World.
According to Mr O’Sullivan, the British Columbia chapter of the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) has developed a protocol to allow those using trenchless techniques to create a carbon credit, resulting from the lower emissions generated by trenchless technology.
The story begins in 2006, when the BC chapter first linked trenchless technology with lower carbon emissions, going on to develop a simple calculator which allowed the comparison of trenchless techniques with open-cut construction. In 2009, this was upgraded, allowing designers to know, with a degree of certainty, what the emissions would be resulting from various methods of construction.
The development is a major step in advancing the cause of trenchless technology and will assist cities in North America to become carbon neutral.
David O’Sullivan’s article on the development of a carbon neutral protocol will appear in the January/February issue of Trenchless World.
