Insituform Technologies has been awarded a US$7 million contract by the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, to rehabilitate nearly 430m of sewer pipeline near the world-renowned Waikiki Beach. The 1,750mm diameter pipeline runs beneath Ala Moana Boulevard, one of the main access roads to the beach. Work will take place around the clock until the project is completed in around 12 months.
Insituform’s jointless CIPP pipe-within-pipe method for rehabilitating pipes was chosen because of the need to allow continued access to the beach throughout the duration of the project. But it is not Insituform’s first Hawaiian contract. Since 2005, the company has completed nearly US$40 million of pipeline rehabilitation work in and around Honolulu. The latest works are part of the city’s 10-year capital improvement plan.
Beginning next month, Insituform will work with locally-owned subcontractors to provide bypass, traffic control, cleaning, CCTV inspection and manhole rehabilitation.
Ford Cooper, general manager of Insituform's West Region, said: “Our experience in the Honolulu area will be valuable as we manage this project in the high-traffic and critical area of Ala Moana Boulevard. We are pleased to continue to work with the City and County as it completes its 10-year capital improvement plan.”
