Overcoming the challenge

Hard rock is a tough challenge for auger-boring contractors. Thankfully, their task has been made easier by the introduction of the disc cutterhead. This is a smaller version of the tool used on large-diameter tunnelling machines.

Making the grade

Quebec contractor Nella Drilling recently completed a rail crossing at a 16° or 28% grade, which is, by far, the steepest angle at which the machinery has been used. “There were many challenges; for example, we had to hold back the casing and augers so they wouldn’t slide down the hill, but we were successful and finished the project on time,” says Gill Tardif, general manager for Nella Drilling. Previous projects using SBU-As on steep inclines have not exceeded 20% grade.
